Overwatch was founded to combat the Omnic threat with the best of the best experts, geniuses, and veteran soldiers, and they were successful. The governments of Earth tried a variety of different tactics (like the power armored Crusaders in Germany that you see in the short) but most failed. Years later the Omnic Crisis occurred, where the factories reactivated and armies of Bastion units rampaged across the planet trying to kill off humanity. Eventually the company went under, and the Omniums (the factories for production, but massive in scale) were shut down. Artificial life became viable, and the Omnic Corporation set up large factories to mass produce AI controlled robots for all kinds of work. It's about 50 years in the future from present day. It shows some of the German "Crusader" soldiers including Reinhardt Wilhelm, (who shoots a huge fire strike from his hammer in the scene) another of the playable heroes from Overwatch. The battle scene he sees in the dead Bastion's memory is a memory of the first Omnic Crisis and one of the huge battles that took place. The short shows Bastion #54 awakening after years of lying dormant and meeting Ganymede, the bird he has as a companion in the game in some of his emotes and play-of-the-game intros. The game itself takes place years after the Omnic crisis where Overwatch has been disbanded, a second Omnic crisis is beginning and other rogue terrorist organizations are implementing their own agendas. One class of robot created as a weapon of war by the Omnics was the Bastion class robot in the short. Overwatch (the organization) was a multinational task force formed as a response to the "Omnic Crisis", essentially an AI uprising where robots turned against humanity and began mass producing war machines to destroy mankind. And when that tool asking for human rights is a tool designed to kill, there's going to be alot of fear around thatīastion is one of the playable characters of the game. An unintended side effect of a learning AI which is why people were so unwilling to support their emancipation when things they had decided were tools began asking for rights. ![]() This is probably reminiscent of how Omnics came into being in the first place. Another thing to keep in mind is soldiers aren't meant to go long periods of time without receiving orders, allowing a Bastion to run autonomously like this will have more unforeseen effects on his programming. This sort of behavior he's learning clashes with his core programming, or his base instincts, and creates conflict as he's clearly confused on what he should do. He was intended to learn enemy battle tactics, but running in a peaceful environment he began learning about nature and began to value life. Bastions are clearly programmed to learn based on his observational and changing behavior, but it was never intended to be run during peacetime since he's a war machine so it's having unforeseen side effects. I think it's more like programmed learning. Click here for a list of other gaming subreddits.
